To a More Perfect Union: U.S. v Windsor
“To A More Perfect Union: U.S. v Windsor” narrates the story of unexpected champions, Edie Windsor, an octogenarian, and her lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, as they pursue justice. After Edie’s spouse passed away, she faced a hefty estate tax bill because the federal government refused to grant benefits to same-sex couples, as Edie’s partner was a woman. Outraged by the lack of acknowledgment for her over forty-year relationship with her beloved, Edie decided to take legal action against the U.S. government—and emerged victorious. The film presents Windsor and Kaplan’s legal and personal journeys through their own accounts and interviews with other legal team members, activists, legal experts, and notable supporters and critics. Beyond highlighting this landmark case in the marriage equality movement, the documentary also explores our collective journey as a society, culture, and citizens striving for equal rights.
