The Penguins of Madagascar
The Penguins of Madagascar is a CGI animated TV show from the United States that airs on Nickelodeon. It features nine characters from the DreamWorks Animation film Madagascar: the penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico; the lemurs King Julien, Maurice, and Mort; along with the chimpanzees Mason and Phil. New characters introduced in the series include Marlene the otter and a zookeeper named Alice. This is the first Nicktoon created in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation.
The pilot episode, titled “Gone in a Flash,” was broadcast during the “Superstuffed Nicktoons Weekend” on November 29, 2008. The Penguins of Madagascar then became a regular series starting on March 28, 2009. The premiere episode attracted 6.1 million viewers, setting a new record for the most-watched premiere.
While the series occasionally references the broader franchise, The Penguins of Madagascar is not set at a specific point in the timeline. McGrath, who co-created the film characters, mentioned that the series is set “not specifically before or after the movie, I just wanted them all back at the zoo. I think of it as taking place in a parallel universe.”
