Sam Swift, once the lead in a popular police drama, experiences a highly publicized meltdown that lands her in rehab. Eager to revive her career, she persuades solitary private detective Eddie Valetik to let her accompany him as part of her research for a possible return to acting. Despite Eddie’s reluctance to play mentor, the enthusiastic Sam applies her on-screen cop experience in real life, unexpectedly becoming a useful asset.
