Aladdin
Aladdin is an animated TV series produced by Walt Disney Television that aired from 1994 to 1995, following the success of the 1992 film. The animation was done at Slightly Offbeat Productions Studios in Penrose, Auckland, New Zealand. The series continued the story from the direct-to-video sequel, The Return of Jafar, with Aladdin now residing in the palace and engaged to the spirited Princess Jasmine. Together, Aladdin and Jasmine faced dangers involving sorcerers, monsters, and thieves. They were accompanied by Abu, the mischievous monkey, the lively Magic Carpet, and the quick-witted, shape-shifting Genie. Iago, the sarcastic parrot who was once Jafar’s pet, also joined them as an antihero. Although Jafar was defeated in the second movie, he makes a single appearance in an episode that also serves as a crossover with Hercules: The Animated Series.
Many original film actors reprised their roles for the series, except for Robin Williams, whose character, the Genie, was voiced by Dan Castellaneta. Unlike The Little Mermaid’s spin-off series, this show did not include musical numbers.
The series was broadcast simultaneously on the syndicated Disney Afternoon block and CBS’s Saturday morning lineup. It was rerun on the Disney Channel in the late 1990s until it was replaced by programming for pre-teens. The show later aired on Toon Disney but has since been removed from the lineup.
