Hot Sugar’s Cold World
Nick Koenig, known as Hot Sugar, finds himself in a complicated situation. Often likened to a contemporary Mozart, this young electronic musician and producer captures everyday sounds—from the clatter of payphone receivers to the rainfall of Hurricane Sandy—and transforms them into Grammy-nominated tracks through chopping, looping, and sampling. He seems to be living the dream life of any musician, complete with a famous internet personality girlfriend, the rapper and singer “Kitty.” However, when she breaks up with him, Hot Sugar feels lost. He escapes to Paris in an attempt to find new sounds and rediscover himself. Filmmaker Adam Lough combines footage of Hot Sugar working with his vintage recording equipment with introspective moments where he shares his thoughts with the camera. As the internet buzzes with tweets and posts about the couple’s breakup, Hot Sugar’s journey continues, uncovering more intriguing aspects of his personality and music. This vibrant and dynamic exploration provides viewers with an intriguing glimpse into the creative process of a modern artist.
