Witchblade
Witchblade is an anime series inspired by the American comic book of the same name. Rather than directly adapting the original storyline, the creators opted to develop a completely new narrative with fresh characters. This project was a collaboration between the Japanese animation studio Gonzo and the American publisher Top Cow, which holds the rights to the Witchblade franchise. The series was licensed for distribution in the United States, with its English-dubbed version debuting on the US cable network IFC in January 2008. It was broadcast on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3:30 AM ET, concluding with its final episode on June 13, 2008, on IFC. Additionally, the series is available for purchase and download on platforms like Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. The first twelve episodes can also be downloaded through Amazon’s Unbox service, and the show is accessible via Netflix Instant Stream. As of June 2011, it was offered for free on Hulu.
By December 2008, six DVD volumes were available in the USA and Canada, with the first volume released in September 2007. A complete boxed set, featuring all 24 episodes and an additional disc with special features, is also available. A Blu-ray box set was released on November 3, 2009.
The anime was directed by Yoshimitsu Ohashi, known for his work on Galaxy Angel and Galaxy Angel Z, while the character designs were crafted by Uno Makoto, who also designed characters for Stellvia and Love Hina.
