Gramsci 44
Between 1926 and 1927, Antonio Gramsci, an Italian thinker and Communist leader, was held captive for 44 days on Ustica, an island near Sicily’s northern shore. During his imprisonment, he and his fellow detainees established a school. This extraordinary educational venture was inclusive, accepting individuals of all ages and social classes, including those who could not read or write. The memory of this groundbreaking school lingers on Ustica. The island, isolated and overlooked, continues to wait at the harbor, anticipating the arrival of a boat from the mainland.
